Dissecting My Chemical Romance's Return Imagery

Image
My new AltPress article explores some of the visual themes of MCR's Return. Check it out! Since My Chemical Romance ’s return announcement, the band have remained relatively quiet. We’ve gotten a couple new show and festival appearance announcements, but fans are absolutely desperate for some clue as to what else might be going on below the surface. For every big MCR moment, the band have found ways to be cryptic and keep us all guessing, so we’re taking the very few images we have available to us to try to figure out what else the band may be up to. Here are a few things we’ve discovered so far. Please take these with a grain of salt; as, MCR have proven time and again that they are five steps ahead of the world and that nothing is quite what it seems. THE STATUE The statue featured in the official “Return” imagery is not new. In fact, it has existed for more than a century in Bologna, Italy. The piece is titled “Cella Magnani” and was sculpted by Pasquale Rizzoli in 1906...

Sad Alien

Image
It’s been more than a year since my last entry, which I would say is inexcusable, but truthfully I have a plethora of reasons for the lack of updates. It would be impossible to maintain this blog with the fervor and time-commitment I had in 2010, and the sadness I feel admitting that is immeasurable. Sometimes the best way to describe a feeling is to give an instance of it, so I will start with this morning. Gerard Way announced that his debut solo album will be here in just a couple months! September 30! He released the tracklisting, with some of the songs we know and love, and a couple whose demos I have been cherishing for a while now. It’s all so exciting. Or it should be, and it would be normally…. But I have a new feeling when I post news about the guys’ continued art these days. It’s sadness. No, I’m not sad that it isn’t My Chemical Romance. I’m not sad to see the guys go their separate ways and pursue new things. I’m thrilled to see what they do, in fac...

#MCRmyForLife - International My Chemical Romance Day 2013

Image
I hope everyone has had a great International My Chemical Romance Day. This year was kind of surreal for me (and I'm sure for many others, as well.) I got to celebrate in a pretty huge way by writing an IMCRDarticle for the magazine for which I work now to highlight the MCRmy and this awesome way we band together every year. That's pretty crazy on its own, considering just a couple years ago, I was standing outside the venue where I worked press at Warped Tour just last week with the members of the band themselves. A person very dear to me pointed to the the magazine I call home's editor that night and said, "You should work for him." Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined I actually would. It’s so strange how things in my life constantly come back to MCR . I think it's because of the profound impact they have had on my life. It's just engrained. I have so much to be thankful for—the MCRmy, the band, the inspiring world we buil...

"You Cannot Destroy Me:" A reflection on life and My Chemical Romance

Image
I couldn’t find words for this for so long. I think I’ve finally accepted that it’s because I’ve said all that I need to say already. I’m not interested in sweeping statements or writing a memorial piece. For the past 8-and-a-half years, I’ve spent nearly every waking moment living My Chemical Romance , honoring and praising them daily. At first, I wanted to do those memorial things. Finding some perfect way to sum up and honor something I’d been actively immersed in and loudly appreciative of for years was impossible, because—as I’ve realized—I’ve already done it. I have no regrets, nor confessions nor treasures I feel the need to share. I searched for the right words to suspend the magic that surrounds My Chemical Romance, and they don’t exist. What does is the music that awakens and stirs it, makes it swirl around and engulf us again and again, forever. It’s in that feeling—those moments of possession at the live shows, the smell of honey and powder, crossing countl...

Co-written by Gerard, the Aquabats Super Show episode titled "Anti-Bats Are Go" is described as "the Superman II version of The Aquabats." It features a thrashcore band called Asthma, and Mikey Way makes his acting debut playing the singer. Last month, Gerard tweeted about co-directing a television show, presumably the aforementioned one: On my way to Salt Lake to co-direct my first episode of TV! — gerardway (@gerardway) November 14, 2012 The brothers also discuss the challenges of writing music after being on the road for an extended period of time and how that translated to 2010's Danger Days: The True Lives Of The F...

My Chemical Romance Digest: September 25-October 8

Image
Here's an outline of what's been going on in the My Chemical Romance world since my previous "MCR digest" post on September 23. Note: I'm going to try to start making these posts a bit closer together. Say, every 5 days? ---   September 28 GERARD WAY performed with GRANT MORRISON and JAMES DEWEES on the opening night of Morrisoncon in Las Vegas, then spoke on a music panel the next day. From fan accounts, I gather that the 'con was very intimate, Gerard was extremely friendly and it was an all-around awesome time. Check out videos below of the performance and part of Gerard's panel. Thanks to Paloma Perez, the lovely lady I interviewed for my review of MCR's Chicago show in December, 2010! See more at Paloma's Youtube channel ! My Chemical Romance's Frank Iero describes 5th MCR album as "bleak" and "elaborate"

Image
In a new interview with Alternative Press , guitarist FRANK IERO revealed that MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE 's still-in-progress 5th album is turning out "fucking elaborate " and says, "There’s a bit of bleakness to it..." He also makes it clear that the album "isn’t going to sound anything like" his recent contribution to the Frankenweenie: Unleashed! soundtrack; though, that song was the first piece of music recorded in the band's new studio ! In the new interview by (one of my favorite humans in the world) Jason Pettigrew, Iero reveals how he got involved with the Frankenweenie: Unleashed! soundtrack and the inspiration behind "This Song Is A Curse," effectively puts LeATHERMOUTH to rest and semi-reveals what he may be up to at North End Studio these days: "Last week, I was in a studio in New Jersey that’s owned by a friend of mine. I just went over to hang out, but we ended up having a couple of beers and doing a song. It...

My Chemical Romance's Frank Iero reveals 'Conventional Weapons' project

Image
UPDATE: September 14, 2012 @ 12:00 p.m. EST   The info in my original post (below) was posted a BIT early; so, I had removed it...until now. My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero has posted an official blog entry explaining the band's upcoming Conventional Weapons project and the story behind the band's Pre- Danger Days "scrapped" album .  The project will include a series of releases, I'm assuming at least in part on 7" vinyl by the store listing from yesterday (below), of never-before-heard MCR songs from the band's 2008-2009 "scrapped album." There will be 5 releases, starting in October, each with 2 never-before-heard songs. Iero said of the project: "Recently we had a band meeting, we ended up talking about the past, and together we listened to those songs we created almost 4 years ago. We discussed the the way those songs made us feel, how they led us to where we are now and what the fate of those songs should be. H...

He said MCR 5 , as he is calling it while it is in-progress, is "going rather quickly" and that the album is "very dark so far." The album, Way hints, will also include  the band's wearing costumes. He told Kevin Smith he's meeting with Colleen Atwood, who has designed the band's costumes since The Black Parade , soon to work out the costumes to accompany the next album. August 8, 2012: My Chemical Romance Tidbits

Image
Between my digging up arrest reports and generally writing news for Alternative Press today, I noticed quite a few My Chemical Romance happenings. Because of MCRupdate's the recent announcement that she would no longer be updating, I figured I would try to post a little more more here to attempt to make up for the loss. Of course, I'll never be able to keep up at the magnitude she did, but little things that I would normally just tweet then move on, I'll try to compile into an occasional digest so they'll be less likely to be missed. August 8, 2012 Bullet Cable posted a second video interview from MCR guitar tech "Punk Rock Dave" talking about equipment. The awesome thing about this video: It was shot inside what Bullet Cable calls "MCR's secret studio," supposedly that studio the band mentioned they were building in Los Angeles many months ago. Watch the new interview below and the first in the series here . You can see ...
