Live Review: Alkaline Trio / September 17, 2012 / The Grog Shop / Cleveland Heights, OH

Image
"A pair of large, white converse appeared under my nose, which the crowd at Cleveland’s Grog Shop kept planting firmly against the wedge stage monitor and knee-high concrete stage in front of me.   I felt a tap on my back and a familiar voice close to me. “Are you okay?” I looked up at the towering, black-lipstick-and-white-Converse-wearing figure before me. Why, hello, Matt Skiba..." Read my full, first-person review for Indulge-Sound.com  XoXo c. And here's a video that captured the above-described moment:

Cassie's Recommendations: Version Six

1. My Chemical Romance at iTunes Festival On July 9, My Chemical Romance appeared at London's Roundhouse as a part of the 31-day-spanning iTunes Festival . The performance streamed in full through iTunes and is still available to watch there, but -- luckily for us -- MCR fans are pros at streamripping by now, so you can watch it through the hour-and-a-half video embedded above. I know almost two hours sounds like an intimidating amount of time to dedicate to watching a concert online, but My Chem's iTunes Fest performance is one of the best I have seen from them in years. Vocalist Gerard Way, toward the middle of their set, had proclaimed it a magical night. And it truly was. 2. VH1's Do Something Awards VH1 and DoSomething.Org are honoring artists and other personalities who have donated their time and resources to helping others in the 2011 Do Something Awards Winners will be announced on August 18 at 9 p.m. EST on VH1. Cassie's Recommendations: Version Four

1. "This Could Be Love" ( Damnesia version) - Alkaline Trio A short story about "This Could Be Love" before I praise this particular version of it. The first times I saw Alkaline Trio live were when they opened on My Chemical Romance's 2005 headlining tour with Reggie & The Full Effect. At that time, they were not yet my second favorite band, but seeing them live then sealed it, and this song in particular hooked me. At the shows, though I didn't know many of the words to their other songs, I knew I could sing along when they commanded the audience to at "This could be love/ Love for fire." After seeing them twice on that tour, I went out and bought Good Mourning and was fully equipped to sing along when I saw them a third time. The crowd was dead that particular night, and Matt Skiba pointed me out because I was so into it, and dedicated a song to me. Amazing! Story aside: Holy SHIT! This version sounds beautiful! Damnesia comes...

Cassie's Recommendations: Version Three

As it turns out, that weekly recommendations series I started became a bit not-so-weekly with the onset of finals and my moving back home from college for the summer. But now, I am home and have more free time. I have titled this post a bit differently from the others; as, yunno, the series clearly shifted away from being a weekly thing. However, I can say that it will now revert to its weekliness! That aside, I will be posting more in general as well. I have a handful of shows lined up to attend over the summer about which I will write, and -- if interviewers start asking MCR about things we don't already know -- I'll have the usual in-depth MCR posts! For now, here's my life in music. 1. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" - The Smiths "Driving in your car/ Oh, please don't drop me home/ Because it's not my home, it's their home/ And I'm welcome no more." Have you ever felt mildly love-nauseated and out-of-place in the ...

Album Review: Alkaline Trio - 'This Addiction'

Dine, Dine My Darling (acoustic) 16. Dead On the Floor (acoustic) 17. Fine (acoustic) 'This Addiction' proves that the men of Alkaline Trio can both stay true to their original style and take risks. Their hearts and livers have yet to dry up, and -- judging by this album -- the trio still has plenty more blood, heartache and booze-riddled lovesickness to offer. Click here to read my full review! Alkaline Trio announce upcoming album title, release date and tour plans with Cursive

Alkaline Trio's upcoming album, to be released on February 23, 2010, will be titled This Addiction . The album title, revealed in an article from Spinner yesterday, is also the name of a song the Trio has performed live. Spinner also announced that Alkaline Trio is set to tour with Cursive in February; though, dates have not been revealed. XoXo c.

Alkaline Trio to Release album on Epitaph in February

In an article posted today on Spinner.Com, Alkaline Trio guitarist and co-vocalist Matt Skiba divulged details of the band's upcoming album to be released jointly on Epitaph and the band's own Heart & Skull label in February. Skiba expressed excitement for the fans to hear the album and says that it will more resemble their earlier, more punk-fueled work than their previous few releases. Skiba said the 11-track album was written in a similar manner to their first album, Goddammit , the simple approach resulting in what Skiba described as "a record that we could easily play live." Fans of the signature dark emotion of Alkaline Trio will not be disappointed; as, Skiba mentioned that the some of the songwriting on their upcoming release centered around very personal and tragic events in the band members' lives. Song titles mentioned in the article were "Dorothy" and "The American Scream". In addition to those songs, one can assume that the al...

Alkaline Trio Announce Record Completion, Premiere New Songs @ Riotfest!

Image
Photo from Alternative Press So, for the past few days, I have been living vicariously through the Live-tweeting of Alternative Press , who are at RiotFest , a Chicago-based punk-rock extravaganza. AltPress just broke that Alkaline Trio played two brand new songs during their RiotFest set tonight at the Congress Theater in Chicago, and singer Matt Skiba announced before the first of the two that the 'Trio has finished recording their new album. From the set list pictured, it seems that those two songs are called "Dine, Dine" and "This Addiction" or some longer variants of those two titles. Alternative Press claim they have videos of said songs, and I will post them here as soon as they are available. ... And, more than two-and-a-half hours later, here they are: "Dine, Dine, My Darling" "This Addiction" The sound quality of the first video pretty terrible, but you can get the general idea. I am LOVING "This Addiction" already, thou...

Lyrics of the Week: Sadie

Image
Alkaline Trio , a long-standing punk-rock threesome from Chicago tend to be known for their remarkably dark lyrics which range in subject from drinking alone and pining after a girl to profiling murderers. The subject of their song, "Sadie," is a real character, a woman known as Susan Atkins or "Sadie Glutz," one of Charles Manson's followers. The song features the words of Atkins' actual testimony on the track voiced by Heather Gabel, who designed Alkaline Trio's well-known heart-skull logo. Atkins, who has been incarcerated for her crimes since 1971, died last night in at age 61 from brain cancer. Sadie Alkaline Trio You're on your own my little nightmare you cannot stay here It's far too bright for you If they attack you just lay there, Play dead dear, it's your only hope of pulling through. And seconds they seem like a lifetime. A dream, recurring, a dream that can't come true. And they'll pin it all on you after all you've b...

Alkaline Trio Update

According to Alternative Press , Alkaline Trio has left Epic Records and will be recording a new album this summer to be released on their own record label. I don't know about you, but I am WAY stoked about that. Want proof? Check out this video and a new song from the May 3rd stop of their tour in Massachusetts: Sounding good, 'Trio, way good. XoXo c.

Lyrics of the Week: "Love Love, Kiss Kiss"

Image
Ah, Valentine's week. The joy, the ♥pinkness♥ , the prospect of holding hands and being lovey-dovey: AKA SHOWING OFF. Though Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio is now happily married, he wanted to write a song not for himself but for the single and alone among us for the 'Trio's most recent album, Agony & Irony . The result was the bitter, tongue-in-cheek anthem "Love Love, Kiss Kiss" and I feel its lyrics are the perfect match for the general mood of this week. Love Love, Kiss Kiss Alkaline Trio Take a look you see I've painted you a picture, It's black and white except the blood's a little richer Down in the corner where I gave it my signature And then I titled it, "This one's for the Winter" Check it out, you see it's just a big disaster I'll dedicate it to the fact that it's so hard for you to dream, A million heartbeats all around you make it hard to sleep It doesn't help you're freezing in your bed your blanket...

Bands + Auctioning Epic Stuff on eBay = A Great Way to Support a Good Cause!

Often, bands like to give back, and a couple of my favorites are doing so this week by offering up sweet things on eBay. Please check out these auctions: • Rock Legends Autographed Guitar for Charity This is a Fender guitar signed by members of Alkaline Trio, Rise Against, T.S.O.L, The Gaslight. Anthem, and many more. Proceeds go to Wheels for Humanity . The bid as of my posting time is only $305.00, which is very reasonable for the value of the item. • Umbrella Academy with Original Sketch by Gerard Way A special edition hardback trade-issue of the first series of Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance's comic, The Umbrella Academy . It comes with an original sketch (NOT A REPRINT) of the comic's character Spaceboy. Very few people can say they own an original piece of Gerard Way's art, so this is something that is hard to pass up. The auction benefits a friend of the artist who has been diagnosed with cancer. The money will go toward making her home wheelchair accessible. T...

What I Listened to in 2008

Image
I have mentioned Last.Fm previously in my blog , and I'm about to mention it again, and show you one of the awesome things it can do. It is human nature to document our lives, I learned last week in Visual Communication class, and last.fm is the perfect way to document one's musical life. On the first day of 2009, I did a screen capture of my last 12 months of listening as documented by last.fm, and it gave me an overview of what kind of person I was musically in 2008. It's a little blurry, so I'll translate it for you: I listened to a LOT of My Chemical Romance, about half as much Alkaline Trio, got really into Billy Talent and Drive-By after having seen them live, and kept it old-school quite a bit. XX Teens, Amanda Palmer, and Anthony Green had the only new releases that I liked. 2008, I feel, was a sad year for music, so I'm looking forward to 2009 immensely. EDIT: That thing that appears to say "Wall Skye" is actually "Matt Skiba"-- but if ...
