Cassie's Recommendations: Version Six

1. My Chemical Romance at iTunes Festival On July 9, My Chemical Romance appeared at London's Roundhouse as a part of the 31-day-spanning iTunes Festival . The performance streamed in full through iTunes and is still available to watch there, but -- luckily for us -- MCR fans are pros at streamripping by now, so you can watch it through the hour-and-a-half video embedded above. I know almost two hours sounds like an intimidating amount of time to dedicate to watching a concert online, but My Chem's iTunes Fest performance is one of the best I have seen from them in years. Vocalist Gerard Way, toward the middle of their set, had proclaimed it a magical night. And it truly was. 2. VH1's Do Something Awards VH1 and DoSomething.Org are honoring artists and other personalities who have donated their time and resources to helping others in the 2011 Do Something Awards Winners will be announced on August 18 at 9 p.m. EST on VH1. MCR fans : "#SINGItForJa...

1. Taking Back Sunday's cover of Kanye West's "Can't Tell me Nothing" I originally heard Taking Back Sunday 's rendition of Kanye 's "Can't Tell me Nothing" through a Warner Brothers Records Summer Sessions stream . Luckily, it wasn't a one-time-only thing (they had commented that it was something they were doing for kicks and were surprised at themselves for playing it live then), and AltPress did a story on their covering it at a recent acoustic in-store so that I could find it and share it with you all. Enjoy! 2.Turntable.fm I finally started using Turntable.fm today (I'm late, I know)! The website is set up with various rooms through which users can stream music for one another as "DJs" or simply listen as audience members. It's great way to interact with others while sharing music LEGALLY! So, join, because I want to play music with people! 3. "Gucci Gucci" - KREAYSHAWN When @shi...

1. "This Could Be Love" ( Damnesia version) - Alkaline Trio A short story about "This Could Be Love" before I praise this particular version of it. The first times I saw Alkaline Trio live were when they opened on My Chemical Romance's 2005 headlining tour with Reggie & The Full Effect. At that time, they were not yet my second favorite band, but seeing them live then sealed it, and this song in particular hooked me. At the shows, though I didn't know many of the words to their other songs, I knew I could sing along when they commanded the audience to at "This could be love/ Love for fire." After seeing them twice on that tour, I went out and bought Good Mourning and was fully equipped to sing along when I saw them a third time. The crowd was dead that particular night, and Matt Skiba pointed me out because I was so into it, and dedicated a song to me. Amazing! Story aside: Holy SHIT! This version sounds beautiful! Damnesia comes...

As it turns out, that weekly recommendations series I started became a bit not-so-weekly with the onset of finals and my moving back home from college for the summer. But now, I am home and have more free time. I have titled this post a bit differently from the others; as, yunno, the series clearly shifted away from being a weekly thing. However, I can say that it will now revert to its weekliness! That aside, I will be posting more in general as well. I have a handful of shows lined up to attend over the summer about which I will write, and -- if interviewers start asking MCR about things we don't already know -- I'll have the usual in-depth MCR posts! For now, here's my life in music. 1. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" - The Smiths "Driving in your car/ Oh, please don't drop me home/ Because it's not my home, it's their home/ And I'm welcome no more." Have you ever felt mildly love-nauseated and out-of-place in the ...

1. "Neat Neat Neat" [The Damned Cover] - My Chemical Romance, LIVE The lovely Carrie , a long-time MCRmy bud of mine, was kind enough to share this great quality video of MCR's performing The Damned's "Neat Neat Neat" at the show she attended in Des Moines, Iowa. The intro is hilariously awkward, but the cover itself is full of piss and awesomeness, and I love it. I was stoked when they played it during the show and at the soundcheck in Cleveland on April 17 and I got to see it for myself. Not many people knew the words, it seemed, so heads-up to future show-goers: This is becoming a staple in their World Contamination sets! Three cheers for MCR's doing classic Punk covers! 2. "Best Places to be a Mom" - Taking Back Sunday Best Places To Be A Mom by adamdamnlazzara Taking Back Sunday released their video for "El Paso" this past week and the band, who returned to their original line-up last March, have a new sel...

Those of you who follow my online shenanigans beyond this blog may be aware that I am the blogs editor for ACRN.com , Ohio University's All Campus Radio Network. One of the blogs I oversee is called Exec Recs . In it, the executives of each of the station's departments list their current recommendations to readers. The blog is updated twice weekly, and I have so much fun and learn so much from the varying tastes of the contributors as I edit the posts that I decided to start my own Weekly Recommendations series here. I hope you enjoy! ____ 1. "Blasphemous Rumors" - Depeche Mode Is there anything better to listen to while writing or painting than Darkwave? Don't challenge me-- I'm a gloomy kid and believe there is not. Recently, I wrote a story for my short fiction class about an encounter between a person who was about to commit suicide and a person trying to convince the other not to. It turned into a mental dialogue about how human interaction wh...
