Some of the strongest bands function as more of a family unit than as partners in music. With more than a decade of experience behind them, Thrice have proven themselves among the strong, and they're showing no signs of weakness, having recently released a new album, Major/Minor , and embarked on their current fall-spanning tour. I spoke to Thrice vocalist/guitarist Dustin Kensrue about what it takes for a band to have longevity, their new album and how the band's helping out Invisible Children . As it turns out, that weekly recommendations series I started became a bit not-so-weekly with the onset of finals and my moving back home from college for the summer. But now, I am home and have more free time. I have titled this post a bit differently from the others; as, yunno, the series clearly shifted away from being a weekly thing. However, I can say that it will now revert to its weekliness! That aside, I will be posting more in general as well. I have a handful of shows lined up to attend over the summer about which I will write, and -- if interviewers start asking MCR about things we don't already know -- I'll have the usual in-depth MCR posts! "Stare at the Sun" - Thrice

"Stare at the Sun" by Thrice has the tiny honor of being among my favorite songs. It is powerful enough to bring me to tears almost every time I listen to it, and today I found new meaning in it when thinking of it in the context of my Difficult Dialogues concerning Religious Beliefs class. In our previous class, we spoke about empiricism vs. romanticism. I tend to not take a religious view on anything, but nearly 100% of the time, think romantically about the world around me and beauty and that it is beyond scientific reasoning. In our last discussion in class, we thought of what scientific dissection of things we can find beautiful can do to our own perceptions of how beautiful they are to us personally. I find myself ridiculously conflicted and wanting more than a scientific reason for the things I feel, and I think this song describes that feeling perfectly.
