October 4, 2012 - Cleveland, OH - House Of Blues October 6, 2012 - Chicago, IL - The Riviera Theater --- This has been the year of TBS birthday shows for my best friend Emily and I. At the end of February, 2 days prior to my birthday, we had managed to weasel our way into a show meant for Ohio State students only (Ha! Suckahss!), and the band managed to play 2 days after Emily's birthday at the House Of Blues in Cleveland a few days ago. Pretty cool coincidence, right? What better way to spend my best friend's birthweekend than following her favorite band on the first couple dates of their tour? Before I get into the details of how shows are going down on TAYF10, I just want to gush briefly about the amazing peop...

Some shows just can't be justified in words, which is precisely why I was so hesitant in my trying to capture my experience seeing Taking Back Sunday in Cincinnati on July 24. Sometimes, as a music journalist (4 classes from a degree, I think I can officially call myself that now), you step back and think, "Fuck! Who the Hell am I :" When you find Taking Back Sunday vocalist Adam Lazzara suddenly standing on the barricade in front of you, singing your favorite new TBS song quite literally against your face as you fumble for something to do with your hands while there's nowhere to put them but on him . Or, as you watch, over the heads of hundreds, him wading through the crowd all the way to the back with his mic cord held up by the crowd (I assume, for a singer, that has to feel something like being attacked by zombies that don't eat brains, but --rather-- grope you). When he looks you dead in the eye, grins and sustains the look as you pantomime his lyric...

Behold, my concert calendar! As you can see, I have recently attended a Taking Back Sunday show for which a live review is conspicuously missing. Skim a bit lower, and you will see that I am also seeing them live tomorrow. I plan to do a sort of combined review for the two shows. I'll say only this: The Cincinnati show was one of the best shows I have ever attended. It was also the hottest. Next on the list: Warped Tour! My press passes for this year's Warped Tour were just confirmed. That is where you come in. Last year was the first time I had experienced life in the Warped press room. I discovered there that, as often happens at the festival, there were plenty of surprises. Plenty of my requested interviews fell through last year, and -- by total surprise -- I ended up interviewing Every Time I Die. Taking Back Sunday's cover of Kanye West's "Can't Tell me Nothing" I originally heard Taking Back Sunday 's rendition of Kanye 's "Can't Tell me Nothing" through a Warner Brothers Records Summer Sessions stream . 1. "This Could Be Love" ( Damnesia version) - Alkaline Trio A short story about "This Could Be Love" before I praise this particular version of it. The first times I saw Alkaline Trio live were when they opened on My Chemical Romance's 2005 headlining tour with Reggie & The Full Effect. At that time, they were not yet my second favorite band, but seeing them live then sealed it, and this song in particular hooked me. At the shows, though I didn't know many of the words to their other songs, I knew I could sing along when they commanded the audience to at "This could be love/ Love for fire." After seeing them twice on that tour, I went out and bought Good Mourning and was fully equipped to sing along when I saw them a third time. The crowd was dead that particular night, and Matt Skiba pointed me out because I was so into it, and dedicated a song to me. Amazing! Story aside: Holy SHIT! This version sounds beautiful! "Neat Neat Neat" [The Damned Cover] - My Chemical Romance, LIVE The lovely Carrie , a long-time MCRmy bud of mine, was kind enough to share this great quality video of MCR's performing The Damned's "Neat Neat Neat" at the show she attended in Des Moines, Iowa. The intro is hilariously awkward, but the cover itself is full of piss and awesomeness, and I love it. I was stoked when they played it during the show and at the soundcheck in Cleveland on April 17 and I got to see it for myself. Not many people knew the words, it seemed, so heads-up to future show-goers: This is becoming a staple in their World Contamination sets! Three cheers for MCR's doing classic Punk covers! 2. Matt Rubano , former bassist of Taking Back Sunday, just announced on Friends Or Enemies Radio that he was recently working with Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump on his new project. "We've been talking about helping to put the band together to go on tour for his record," Rubano said. The bassist gushed that Stump is "a mountain of talent," who -- during their time working together -- took on instruments from guitar to drums to even a trumpet. The unique dynamic the artists have is one that Matt Rubano describes as, "we're both kind of these weird secret jazz fans that ended up in rock bands." That sounds like a combination that could lead to some interesting tunes. Rubano said there will be more information in the coming weeks. Keep your eyes open! XoXo c.

June 22 - Starland Ballroom - Sayreville, NJ June 23 - Irving Plaza - New York, NY June 24 - Electric Factory - Philadelphia, PA June 25 - House of Blues - Boston, MA June 27 - The Metro - Chicago, IL June 29 - The Wiltern - Los Angeles, CA One date has been posted for the Fillmore at Irving Plaza in New York on June 23 on TBS's Ticketmaster event page . Looks like it's true. TBS has reverted... Your thoughts? Original Post: Matt Rubano will no longer be playing bass for Taking Back Sunday, according to a post from the former bassist on the band's official page. Rubano played with the Long Island band for seven years. Along with the announcement came a twitter name change for the bassist as well as a strange pop-up picture on the band's Web site that appears to be an old photograph of the band (shown in this post). The band has not addressed Rubano's leaving further nor have they explained the picture. With all the out-of-nowhere strangeness, some fans speculate that it could be a lead-up to an April Fool's joke; as, the band members are known April Fool's Day pranksters. "WHAT'S IT FEEL LIKE TO BE A GHOST? LOUDER NOW, LOUDER NOW:" that is what was screaming in my ears at 4:45 A.M. yesterday. My friend Emily, in the spirit of the event for which we were waking, had set her phone's alarm to a Taking Back Sunday song. By 5 A.M., we had left my dorm, and around 6, were sitting outside Lifestyle Communities Pavilion in the chilly weather with which Mother Nature decided to burden Columbus, Ohio. When we got there, the weather was dry. By 9 A.M., we were flooded from our sitting positions on the concrete. We were forced to plan our bathroom breaks and meals around the weather, and found ourselves shivering from cold. This is the way we pay our dues. Some of you may know that I started this blog as a suggestion from my Journalism 101 professor, and it has grown into this ball of madness you're viewing. In the beginning, I was thinking I'd use it to show off my knowledge about journalism and media in general as a journalism student, but fuck that. FUCK that. I am not yet ready to be an old man who is obsessed with gadgets and who likes blogging about "media this, media that." No, this has become my place to do what I intend to do for the rest of my life: connect with other fans through my writing and write about what I love. Not that I don't love journalism; obviously I do, but it's like my trusty tour van and music is my tour route. I have learned multitudes about both journalism and about the music industry this school year alone and I know I have only more to learn and am way excited for that! Taking Back Sunday certainly are logical when they start at the beginning, with "You Know How I Do", the first track from their debut album, "Tell All Your Friends"- certainly an ace choice for the crowd that gathered for them in Cincinnati on May 15th: a crowd that appreciated the old tunes with fierce intensity and reveled in the new, moshed with all their might to the well-known as well as to the obscure. Taking Back Sunday hit the jackpot with this audience and they knew it, especially when we the crowd, as a screaming mass, yelled back the lyrics to their songs louder than they had been sung to us, causing lead singer Adam Lazzara to grin, praise us appreciatively, shake his head in amazement, and even topple over from his crouching position saying, "I'm supposed to be up here loo...

Hey, everyone. I just wanted to let you in on some things to come. As you know from my posting about it, I saw TBS on the 15th, and I will have a review of that show very soon. Let me just tell you that it was AMAZING. My mind is thoroughly blown. The crowd had the most energy I had ever seen at one of their shows (the band acknowledged this with shocked grins as they watched us), and it was the best performance I have ever seen from them. Are they, indeed, "New Again"? - Yes, I say that with all my heart-- TBS seems to have mended any wounds that may have been plaguing them, and are triumphing over... The world it may seem. I met most of the band while waiting in line for 12 hours in a dangerous area-- definitely worth it, but I'll explain it all later. XoXo c.
